Hosta Maple Leaf

Hosta Maple Leaf is an interesting sport of Hosta Sieboldiana Frances Williams. The way the margin variegation pattern gives the center of the leaf a maple leaf appearance.

This large Hosta plant measures at 24 inches high by 45 inches wide. The size of the leaves is 14 inches long by 12 inches wide.

The lightly corrugated leaves of this plant are green with a chartreuse margin. The leaves have slight visible veining. This plant is reminiscent of Frances Williams but the margin on the leaf is more narrow and the contrasting colors are more prominent and attractive.

The white flowers bloom in June.

Other Hosta Varieties:

Hosta Super Nova
Hosta Sunburst
Hosta Time Tunnel

Hosta Time Tunnel

Hosta Time Tunnel is a medium sized sport of Hosta Sieboldiana Frances Williams. This plant forms a mound 36 inches in diameter. The leaves are 8 inches long by 6 inches wide.

The ovate leaves are green with golden margins. The variegation of this plant is almost in 3 equal proportions. It appears to have a bolt of green as the accent rather than the margins. This plant is not corrugated but is nicely veined. The leaves are slightly shiny and slightly rippled.

The tubular flowers have a short 2 week bloom time in June. The seeds are not viable and the plant is under patent until 2024.

Other Hosta Varieties:

Hosta Super Nova is is large hosta plant with gold leaves with blue/green accents.
Hosta Golden Sunburst is a giant Hosta plant. This plant has chartreuse leaves which turn golden green in the summer.

Christmas Tree Hosta

Christmas Tree Hosta is a large fast growing mounding Hosta plant. It will get to a height of 23 inches and a diameter of 30 inches. The leaves of this plant form a tight clump of very attractive variegated foliage.

Christmas Tree has green leaves with a narrow yellow margin. The oval leaves are pretty big at 9 inches long by 8 inches wide and are strongly textured and cup downward at the tips. The thick leaves help give it a resistance to slugs.

This plant should be grown in mostly shade to dappled sunlight. Too much sun can cause the leaves to burn which is not unexpected from a plant with Hosta Sieboldiana Frances Williams as part of its parentage. Hosta Beatrice was the pod parent of Christmas Tree.

Christmas Tree Hosta has pale lavender flowers which set viable seed.

This is a good plant for the shade garden but should be avoided if you have a garden that has little or no shade to protect it from the sun. This Hosta plant requires the same general care as most others.

Hosta Sieboldiana Elegans - Related Plants

I have a list of Hosta Sieboldiana Elegans descendents but wanted to give a brief description of each. We know that Hosta Elegans is a rather large grey/blue Hosta plant and it has many named cultivars that have come from it but a description of each cultivar can come in handy should someone what to buy a Hosta Sieboldiana of a particular variety.

Abiqua Parasol
Hosta Abiqua Parasol is a very large blue green Hosta. It leans more green than blue. It has large strongly veined leaves which are heart shaped. The leaves themselves are also large 14 inches long by 9 inches wide. A nice attractive solid colored Hosta plant. The plant is 26 inches high by 50 inches wide. It is not sun tolerant or slug resistant.

Aurora Borealis
Hosta Aurora Borealis is a nice blue green variegated Hosta. The center of the leaf is blue green and the wide margins are yellow. It is 24 inches high by 50 inches wide. The heavily textured leaves are 13 inches long by 11 inches wide. It is somewhat sun tolerant but not completely so test it in various sun amounts until you find the amount that works best in your garden. It is also slug resistant.

Barbara Ann
Hosta Barbara Ann is a green and white variegated Hosta. The main leaf color is green with narrow white margins. This is a large hosta plant which does not like sun but is slug resistant. The textured leaves are 9 inches long by 7 inches wide.

Bix Blues
Hosta Bix Blues is a very blue hosta plant. Generally in the world of plants blue is more of a grey but sometimes you get lucky and find something that looks more like “real blue”. This large Hosta is 22 inches high by 35 inches wide. The leaves are not as textured as some other Sieboldiana plants but the veins stand out. This is a very attractive plant which has viable seed.

Blue Belle
Hosta Blue Belle is a blue green Hosta well it’s barely blue but it counts. This medium sized Hosta grows to 19 inches tall by 36 inches wide. The leaves are slightly cupped and ovate. The size of this plants leaves are 7 inches long by 6 inches wide. This plant is not sun tolerant but is slug resistant.

Blue Blush
Hosta Blue Blush is a small Hosta plant with blue green leaves. It is 7 inches high by 15 inches wide. It is a cute medium blue Hosta plant. The powdery blue leaves have very little texture and are lance shaped. They are 7 inches long by 3 inches wide.

I’ll be adding more sports of Hosta Sieboldiana Elegans just keep watching.

Hosta Sieboldiana Frances Williams

Another old favorite Hosta is Hosta Sieboldiana ‘Frances Williams’. Frances was named for the person who discovered it and is grown in many shade gardens.

This large plant gets to about 28’ high and 48’ wide so it needs plenty of space to grow. A large garden is required if you want to grow this plant (unless it is the only plant you want to grow).

This variegated hosta has blue grey leaves with a cream colored border that are nicely puckered. If you give this shade plant a little extra sun the cream becomes more yellow but you could get a little leaf burning because this cultivar can’t handle much in the way of heat or sunlight.

The flowers of Hosta Sieboldiana ‘Frances Williams’ are lavender in color and will bloom in or around July.

Dividing the Hosta Frances Williams is just like dividing any other Hosta except that it does not grow as fast as some so you may not get as many new plants as quickly as you could with another variety.

A sport of Hosta Sieboldiana Elegans which started the “blue hostas” that we are so familiar with today this plant has many sports of its own which are just as beautiful in different ways.

Caring for the hosta Frances Williams is like caring for any other hosta, give it lots of shade, lots of water, and plenty of room to grow.

This is a slug resistant garden plant (not slug proof) but it is susceptible to leaf burn if exposed to too much sunlight. Protect this plant from the heat and sun (and deer) and it will stay healthy for decades.

This plant is a great companion to other shade loving and water loving garden plants including other types of hosta. Don’t plant this plant with your drought tolerant plants because the soil conditions that each need are not similar enough to keep both happy in the same garden bed.

If you are wanting to try out hostas this plant is a good plant for the beginner gardener and is tolerant to many types of soil. If you enjoy this plant you will begin to look for and pick up many other cultivars and before you know it you too will have a hosta collection that is the envy of … someone who wants a collection of their own.

Hosta Sieboldiana ‘Frances Williams’ is a standard in shade gardens for a reason. It is easy to grow and easy to love and will brighten many dark corners with its variegated leaves.

Hosta Sieboldiana Elegans

This is the common ancestor of most blue hostas, Hosta Siboldiana Elegans is an old favorite in the garden. It is easy to grow and a great starter plant for a beginner to the shady garden.

Elegans has huge blue/grey leaves and flowers around July depending on your zone. It is hardy from zones 3 – 9 so there is no excuse (other than no shade or a desert) for not having this plant in your garden.

It follows most of the Hosta growing rules… Lots of water, mostly shade, you know the drill right? This Hosta Plant not only has huge leaves but it also is a large plant both in height and diameter, it will grow to at least 30inches in height and 48 inches across. This is most definitely not a plant that will go unnoticed in your garden.

The flowers bloom low to the plant, unlike most Hostas, which throw their flowers up on a large stalk. Having the whitish/lavender blooms just above the gorgeous leaves will help to set them off and make them something to look at which most Hosta Plants miss out on. A few white flowers hanging out waaay above the plant is not always the most striking feature, which is one reason why hostas tend to be “foliage plants” rather than great foliage AND great flowers.

Although Hosta Siboldiana ‘elegans’ is sold and marketed as a blue hosta it actually is bluer if you give it a bit of filtered sunlight. This plant will grow in full shade but for it to be at its best looking give it a bit of sunlight and see just how great it can get.

Don’t expect to get true to type baby plants if you decide to try to sow the seeds that it sets, like all hosta types you will get a surprise with every seed that you manage to keep the birds away from.

A golden edged sport of elegans is Hosta Siboldiana ‘frances williams’ which is also a large leaved and generally large sized hosta that makes a great companion to it’s parent plant.

Hosta Siboldiana ‘elegans’ is a long lived, easy to propagate, and hardy plant that should find a place in most gardens. Since it is one of the more common Hosta Varieties it is not a plant that will cost a fortune to purchase and by dividing the plant in early spring you can increase the number that you have in your garden.
